Weight Training For Weight Loss

Lets face it, everyone of us is different in almost every way. We all learn differently and exercise is no different. Lets take weight training for weight loss, can we just rely on weight training alone? No probably not, in fact no not at all. We need a balance of healthy eating, good moderate exercise and a good mindset.

Okay, lets take a scenario …. ( cardio ) In today’s society especially in western culture. Our daily routines may actually be hurting our weight loss goals. Not everyone of course, but some of us.

What is the first thing that most of us think about when we think of weight loss or losing weight? Lets hop on the old treadmill and burn some calories. On the surface it sounds great, your doing a lot of work, sweating and breathing heavy. Surely an hour a day of this hard work and exercise can surely burn those unwanted calories. Crazy right?

Cardio- Good? Bad?

Would you be surprised to learn that this is actually wrong! No I am not crazy, it is like saying just using weight training for weight loss is the only way to lose weight. Lets lay it all out…

Yes cardio will burn calories, it is true and yes some cardio is good for you and promotes a healthy heart and increases your endurance. On the other hand heavy cardio actually will have the opposite effects. Before I go into the why and how I will give you an example.

Imagine pre-historic Man…..and Woman…….. These men and women are running around the world chasing antelope, deer and the occasional dinosaur ( according to some people ). Most of their diet would consist of animal protein and what edible plants they can scrounge. If cardio was so great for losing weight , these people would simply starve to death while running down their food. All the cardio would do is burn through their energy reserves faster than they could replace them. Yet they did not starve to death, why?

For starters, heavy cardio is hard on your joints, knees and feet. Secondly it can be hard on the heart. Too much cardio actually begins to add scar tissue to your heart and increases your chances of a heart attack. With anything in life moderation is the key.

The Science

Our bodies are genetically designed to survive, our body is designed to store energy as fuel for both immediate use and those times where a food source is scarce. Makes sense right, we are designed to store fat, some of us store fat better than others.

When your body is being starved or deprived of the proper nutrients it requires either by starving yourself or some crazy diet it will begin to switch into survival mode. With heavy cardio your body will become anabolic. Meaning it will begin to burn the  most effective source of energy first, and it’s not fat it is the muscle.

Take a look at most long distance runners who compete professionally , many of them are lean and skinny and have to pack in the carbs just to maintain their muscle mass. Your looking for your body to burn fat and not the muscle, it’s all about balance when it comes to weight loss, it’s not cardio alone, diets, weight training, there’s so much more involved.

The biggest secret to weight loss isn’t any one of these things on their own. Its not running 10k a day. It’s not going to the gym and using weight training for weight loss only, it’s not starving yourself or some crazy diet plan. It is all of these things in the right sequence, moderation.
